Convertsc flex is a bi-directional power converter from AEG Power Solutions with IGBT technology. The converter is the core element of any battery energy storage system as it charges and discharges batteries to store or provide active and reactive power according to the application requirement (frequency control, peak shaving, energy shifting or
voltage control).

Critical applications
New challenges are appearing in the energy sector due to the ongoing shift from base-load fossil power plants towards volatile renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic. Among these challenges are voltage and frequency stabilization, as well as an increasing demand for balanced power and peak shaving. The majority of these problems can be solved with battery storage solutions.

While the battery system solely provides the storage capacity, it is the Storage Converter that ultimately transforms the chemically stored energy into a grid service by supplying power according to the application requirement.

Thyrobox DC 3

Thyroboxdc 3 from AEG Power Solutions fulfills the high requirements of power supply for demanding industrial processes: a perfect stability of output voltage for the best current quality and high efficiency performance.

In line with the specificities of those processes, power consumption is as close as possible to sine wave form and the system has a high power factor. Thyroboxdc 3 is based on proven B12 Thyristor Rectifier and IGBT chopper technology. Due to the wide output voltage range, load voltages from 50 V up to 700 V can be realized with Thyroboxdc 3. The smallest ThyroboxdC 3 has an output current of 1,800 A, which can be modularly expanded to 7,200 A.

Convert SC Flex Chosen by swb to Equip the Battery Energy Storage System of a Major Automotive Equipment Production Site

Zwanenburg, The Netherlands, February 27, 2020 –, AEG Power Solutions, a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for industrial, critical infrastructure environments and innovative power electronic applications, today announced that swb Erzeugung AG & Co. KG (swb) a Bremen-based German utility has chosen Convert SC Flex to equip the battery enery storage system that they provide to a major automotive equipment company.

The end customer produces premium plastic parts for the interior and exterior of a future-oriented automotive industry, using mostly injection moulded and electroplated processes.
The company was looking for a solution for power backup for its highly sensitive chemical processes in one of its sites, and to minimize its energy costs by managing peak demands. A conventional UPS system would not have answered the full requirement, but a battery energy storage could. A proposal for a battery energy storage system was engineered by swb and AEG PS involved to provide the power electronics. The solution comprises a Convert SC Flex V, a low voltage transformer and a PLC (programmable logic controller) based solution for grid fault detection and islanding as well as resynchronization feature once the supply is provided by the public grid again. SWB is combining these elements with a lithium-based battery incl. a battery management system and an overall control system to provide peak-shaving and back-up power supply for the industrial load.

The Convert SC Flex is a bi-directional power converter with IGBT technology. Converters are the core element of any battery energy storage system, as they charge and discharge batteries to store and provide power to meet the needs of plenty of applications. The latest option available features a seamless transition between on-grid and off-grid mode. This extends the battery energy storage system’s usage beyond its core functions to back-up in the event of a black-out. The system can also be provided as a turnkey solution including battery and medium voltage transformer.

AEG Power Solutions Leads Research for Hybrid UPS to Optimize Local Energy Supply in GIS-MS Project

Warstein-Belecke, February, 17, 2020  -  AEG Power Solutions, a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for industrial, critical infrastructure and innovative electrical applications, initiated and leads the industrial research project "GIS-MS" sponsored by North-Rhein Westphalia ministry of industry with the support of the European development fund. The project aims at developing stationary intelligent storage systems, also called “hybrid UPS” system, to improve local energy management.

In addition to AEG Power Solutions which drives the project and acts as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) expert and manufacturer, the project involves the Department of Power Electronics and Electric Drives (LEA) at Paderborn University, BatterieIngenieure GmbH as experts for battery technology, Next Kraftwerke GmbH as operator of one of the largest virtual power plants in Europe, Hoppecke Batteries GmbH (associated partner) Battery manufacturer and the Avasition GmbH (associate partner) as experts for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation systems.

Electricity supply has long been driven mainly by costs and reliability, but sustainability is also increasingly at stake and requires the integration of renewable power sources such as wind or photovoltaic. As this trend gains momentum, new challenges arise to integrate them into the grid and local energy management is required to balance consumer needs and electricity produced as well as guarantee the stability of the grid. Compensation can be achieved through customers flexible usage but also by using stationary intelligent storage systems to store excess energy when demand is low and reinject it when peaks of consumption arise. They could be a key part of the standard electricity supply solutions of the future.

Stationary systems which secure power supply have been in use in industrial companies for several decades; known as uninterruptible power supply systems they take-over power supply in case of grid failure but also guarantee a stable quality of supply in case of voltage variations. So far UPS are used mainly to secure power for strategic loads and prevent security issues or protect people and assets. The systems are embedding batteries which provide the energy back-up but are subject to chemical aging processes and must be serviced and replaced at regular intervals.

The 3-year project aims at designing a system which would combine the benefits of a UPS with an extended energy storage system. This new solution aims to support local energy management and provide power supply protection for up to 100 kW as a prototype unit. As industrialized solution it shall be scalable to several hundred kW.

GIS-MS focuses on solving the technical challenges that this application is raising, which mainly are:
  • the power-electronic topology of the “hybrid UPS” system (especially the multi-use converter which combines rectifier and inverter modes and needs to integrate grid forming feature in case of grid failure).
  • the choice of the battery, which needs to be adapted to their new cycling operation mode involving also a new dimension in storage. This means designing new models for battery aging which will ultimately translate into business case for such operations.
  • its conformity with regulatory and normative frameworks.
Local stationary “hybrid UPS” systems would be synergizing the benefit of standard UPS systems with the ones of battery energy storage to a campus or a facility. The “hybrid UPS” is providing high quality power and protection to critical loads and allows to connect less critical loads in the protection loop on an off-line mode. 

In addition, local energy resources can be integrated to that mode, thanks to the multi-use converter which is forming the grid.  Finally, when the public grid is available, the system would provide grid stabilizing services such as “FCR” (frequency containment reserve) or primary control power, as well as services like peak-shaving or increasing increase the self-consumption rate of renewable energies. The benefit for the customer (in this case a campus) would result in a reduced electricity bill when simultaneously making the system more sustainable and increasing the security of supply of non-critical loads.

AEG Power Solutions Announces that Convert SC Flex was Chosen by CMI Energy to Equip One of the Battery Energy Storage Systems of its MiRIS Project

Zwanenburg, The Netherlands, March 11, 2019 –, AEG Power Solutions a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for all types of critical and demanding applications, is supplying power conversion system (Convert SC Flex and transformer) to CMI Energy for its MiRIS project.

MiRIS is an ambitious photovoltaic pilot plant combined with energy storage. The installation consists in 6,500 solar panels, (with a peak production capacity of 2 MWp), combined with battery energy storage systems using different technologies, namely two types of flow batteries,one type of Lithium-Ion battery and NaS battery to give, when all the equipments will be in operation, a total of 5.4 megawatt hours The Energy Management System which monitors the facility was developed by ULiège in collaboration with CMI. The energy produced will be used for the electricity consumption of the headquarters of CMI, or fed into the distribution network in a controlled manner thanks to the intelligent system developed in collaboration with the University of Liège.

The project is set up in Seraing, Belgium, at the headquarters of CMI Energy and has been inaugurated in October 2018. CMI Energy will use this system as a test bench of typical use cases (electricity self-consumption, solar photovoltaic time shift and resale of the exceeding electricity, as well as primary reserve, voltage stability, etc.) in different configurations (off and on-grid) and comparing the storage technologies. Intelligence collected through the tests will give an in-depth understanding of how the different types of battery perform depending on production and usage profiles and ultimately will support the improvement of integrated electricity production/storage/management systems.

The power conversion system provided by AEG Power Solutions consists in a Convert SC Flex converter and a transformer embedded in an outdoor enclosure. Convert SC Flex bi-directional power converter provides an outstanding conversion efficiency factor for both the charging and discharging phases and offers a wide range of DC input voltage which spans from 330 V to 1000 V. This allows to use the converter with any type of battery technology. In the MiRIS project Convert SC flex is combined with a flow battery storage, proving its capability to provide the initial charging phase that those batteries specifically require. Convert SC Flex will also demonstrate in this configuration that it allows seamless transition between on and off-grid mode.

AEG Power Solutions Announces that SWB Chose its Innovative Concept of Combined Battery Energy Storage and Power to Heat to Provide Primary-Frequency Control Power

announced that swb Erzeugung AG & Co. KG (swb) a Bremen-based German utility chose its innovative concept of combining battery energy storage and power-to-heat for its primary-frequency control power operations. This service is provided to gridoperators to stabilize the grid and is increasingly needed as renewable sources are integrated.

In this hybrid system, energy is stored both in a battery system and an electrical heating system which are connected to the power converter. These are controlled as one unit to provide the required bidirectional power flow (to or from the grid) to balance the frequency and ultimately to ensure the stabilization of the grid.

AEG Power Solutions designed this unique concept based on its power electronic expertise. The patent is currently under review. The company has engineered the complete solution and will provide swb with 24 storage converters integrated in ISOmetal
sheet containers together with an hybrid storage option, low-voltage distribution cabinets, auxiliary power supply as well as medium voltage transformers and the heating system in separate enclosures.
This hybrid storage system significantly reduces the cost of primary-frequency power operation. First, the required battery capacity is significantly smaller compared to a conventional battery-only system (approx. 50%), and the second source of storage (heating)is considerably less expensive. Additionally, power electronics and all components for grid connection (e.g. transformer) are used twice by utilizing both storage systems which contributes to minimizing installation hardware costs. This improves the pay back for the operators of the system and helps to reduce grid fees which is of general public interest.
