Fuels and chemicals produced from CO2

Fraunhofer IGB makes the greenhouse gas CO2 usable as a carbon source for the chemical industry: Various concepts of chemical and electrochemical CO2 conversion can be offered, based on the development of suitable catalysts and catalytic processes. These processes are particularly attractive for companies emitting CO2 in large quantities, opening the opportunity to generate additional revenue from this waste stream and to reduce the companies’ carbon footprint.

The efficiency of chemical processes, and thus its economic viability, crucially depends on the performance of the applied catalyst. This is especially true for reactions involving CO2 as an educt. Fraunhofer IGB holds know-how and patented processes for the targeted and efficient synthesis of CO2-activating catalysts. For example, a time-saving and cost-efficient process for the synthesis of catalysts for methanol production has been developed (patent pending). The activity, selectivity and stability of catalysts are examined under various reaction conditions in a high-throughput screening system with four parallel tube reactors.

Chemical-biotechnological process cascade: CO2-based methanol synthesis

The combination of (electro)chemistry and biotechnology in process cascades represents a promising option to generate valuable chemical products from CO2. Fraunhofer IGB has developed such a cascade based on chemical methanol synthesis and subsequent methanol fermentation to isoprene, lactic acid, polyhydroxybutyric acid and higher hydrocarbons. A prototype has been designed and the process patented (DE102016203889, WO2017153396). This chemical-biotechnological process cascade enables the production of value-added products with higher market prices compared to methanol and holds the potential for an economically viable valorization of CO2 also for small-scale production.
