Our products

Product category: Redox Flow

Ever growing renewable power supply and progressive electrification poses major challenges to the power supply industry.
Short-term power outages can lead to enormous losses in public life and industrial production – therefore utilities are obliged to ensure sufficient power supply at all times.

Volterion’s storage solutions can be used for both primary and secondary reserve applications.

Volterion systems provide the high performance and fast response times required to control the frequency of power supply systems.
Already installed power systems can be upgraded with Volterion’s high performance systems – enabling suppliers and utilities to offer hybrid solutions to the secondary reserve market.

Volterion systems offer lower investment costs and lower operating costs compared to other solutions.
Payback times of less than one year are achievable through higher revenues from already installed systems.

Volterion works with trusted technology partners and experienced installers with extensive knowledge of the power industry.
Volterion’s systems provide proven technology solutions and services that overcome economic and regulatory barriers to the modernisation of our energy networks.

We are your partner with an experienced and competent team behind us.

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) acts as an independent power source and supplies important electrical systems in the event of a primary power failure. This is of particular interest to hospitals, scientific laboratories, computer centres, telecommunications systems and shipping – also due to the system’s technical advantages in terms of overheating and fire safety.

Volterion storage systems immediately ensure a reliable supply and protect life and property from the consequences of a failure.
The emergency power application of the storage systems is of enormous importance, but relatively seldom necessary. The systems offer a high added value in times without UPS application – in order to use the capacity of the systems effectively and to keep the investment costs as low as possible, further application possibilities in the area of control energy and network stabilization should be considered.

Grid usage fees are very cost-intensive for industrial and commercial electricity consumers, as they are based on the highest power purchased during the billing period. The more evenly the electricity is purchased, the lower the service price costs of the grid usage fees are.

By system-integrating of Volterion storage solutions, peaks can be smoothed and a uniform load curve guaranteed. This significantly reduces costs for industry and commerce and also stabilises public networks. At the same time CO2 emissions can be reduced by charging with renewable energy sources.

Our storage systems react flexibly, enable emission-free operation and combine all the advantages of peak shaving:

Lower electricity costs by reducing peak demand
Lower operating costs for power generation at peak times (reduction of demand for peak systems)
Lower CO2 emissions due to flatter loads with lower peak values
Furthermore many network operators offer financial incentives to consumers who reduce demand on the network at peak times.

About us

Company details

Volterion was founded in 2015 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT.

Right from the start, we put our energy into the development of the stack – the energy converter of a redox flow battery and thus the basis for an efficient system.

After extensive development work, we now produce our stacks using a unique manufacturing process that we are constantly improving.

On this basis, we also develop innovative energy systems such as the powerRFB. A scalable battery in a compact housing that meets the highest industrial demands and is used in many different applications.

Sascha Berthold, Thomas Gebauer and Thorsten Seipp are the founders of the company and have been involved in the development of Volterion technology. Together with Kees van de Kerk they form the management today.

Volterion has received many awards for its technology and business model, including the ACHEMA Energy Founders Award, the TU Startup Award, the KUER Growing Business Award and the Best Pitches Award.
