Temperature distribution

Optimization of the temperature distribution in fuel cells

During the operation of fuel cells, heat is produced as the result of activation losses and ohmic losses. The efficiency of PEM fuel cells is tpyically about 50 %, which means that the fuel cell produces as much heat as electrical energy. The waste heat has to removed from the fuel cell. At the same time, the temperature in the cell has to be as uniform as possible to guarantee the optimal perfomance. Temperature gradients result in locally differing reaction rates, hot spots and thermal stresses, which can result in damaging of the fuel cell.

The cooling channles of a LTPEM fuel cell are designed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Assembly and production technologies

Development and implementation of production processes for the fuel cell technology

An important component for the market launch of fuel cells is to ensure a high-quality production process. Several former projects pointed out that a low-cost and repeatable production of fuel cell stacks can only be achieved by precise and automated solutions. The development of these solutions is one of the main tasks of the department Production Technology at ZBT.
Meanwhile there is an extensive expertise concerning fuel cell production technologies, due to several successfully completed research and development projects. On the one hand these projects are based upon customised requirements and on the other hand initialised by our own efforts.

The key aspects of these projects are:
•    Gripper- and handlingsystems for fuel cell components (bipolar plates, MEA, etc.)
•    Applications for gasket production (screening process, dispenser)
•    Optimisation of fuel cell components concerning assembly issues
•    Quality assurance
•    Simulation of integrated facility layouts and robot stations
•    Programming of robots and controllers

The hydrogen and fuel cell center ZBT GmbH

The hydrogen and fuel cell center "Zentrum für BrennstoffzellenTechnik" (ZBT GmbH) since founded in 2001 is supporting industry to speed up the market introduction of fuel cells and hydrogen technologies.

ZBT employees an interdisciplinary team of almost 100 qualified personnel, most having many years of experience in the field of research and development. Their extensive expertise and the outstanding infrastructure are incorporated in numerous co-operative ventures with industrial companies and research partners. Projects and services of ZBT cover a wide range from the development of reformers, fuel cell stacks and completely serviceable systems, the testing of production and manufacturing technologies for cell components and whole fuel cell stacks through to the testing of market-based developments with a view to licensing. The portfolio of the development service provider ZBT is geared consistently to the needs of the industrial partners.

ZBT is a non profit limited company (GmbH), CEO is Prof. Dr. Angelika Heinzel. Share holder ist University Duisburg-Essen. The start of ZBT and the main infrastructure was supported by the European Funds for Regional Development and the Region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Today ZBT as member of Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft receives a limited base funding by the ministry of innovation of the state of North-Rhine-Westfalia.
