Thanks to the on-grid off-grid mode seamless transition capability, AEG PS solution for battery storage installation becomes ideally suited to support any type of energy storage application as well as simultaneously secure power supply for critical processes and infrastructure. AEG PS can offer different types of outdoor solutions or engineers a full BES systems that is then built with certified partners. Soultions range from single unit housing to metall-sheet iso-container housing up to six units. A full battery energy storage solution combined in a container includes the power conversion itself, the batteries, medium voltage transformer and switch-gear and all auxiliary components as well as the energy management system.

Thyrobox DC 3 from AEG Power Solutions fulfills the high requirements of power supply for demanding industrial processes: a perfect stability of output voltage for the best current quality and high efficiency performance. In line with the specificities of those processes, power consumption is as close as possible to sine wave form and the system has a high power factor. Thyrobox DC 3 is based on proven B12 Thyristor Rectifier and IGBT chopper technology. Due to the wide output voltage range, load voltages from 50 V up to 700 V can be realized. AEG Power Solutions Announces that Convert SC Flex was Chosen by CMI Energy to Equip One of the Battery Energy Storage Systems of its MiRIS Project

Zwanenburg, The Netherlands, March 11, 2019 –, AEG Power Solutions a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for all types of critical and demanding applications, is supplying power conversion system (Convert SC Flex and transformer) to CMI Energy for its MiRIS project.

MiRIS is an ambitious photovoltaic pilot plant combined with energy storage. The installation consists in 6,500 solar panels, (with a peak production capacity of 2 MWp), combined with battery energy storage systems using different technologies, namely two types of flow batteries,one type of Lithium-Ion battery and NaS battery to give, when all the equipments will be in operation, a total of 5.4 megawatt hours The Energy Management System which monitors the facility was developed by ULiège in collaboration with CMI. The energy produced will be used for the electricity consumption of the headquarters of CMI, or fed into the distribution network in a controlled manner thanks to the intelligent system developed in collaboration with the University of Liège.

The project is set up in Seraing, Belgium, at the headquarters of CMI Energy and has been inaugurated in October 2018. CMI Energy will use this system as a test bench of typical use cases (electricity self-consumption, solar photovoltaic time shift and resale of the exceeding electricity, as well as primary reserve, voltage stability, etc.) in different configurations (off and on-grid) and comparing the storage technologies. Intelligence collected through the tests will give an in-depth understanding of how the different types of battery perform depending on production and usage profiles and ultimately will support the improvement of integrated electricity production/storage/management systems .

The power conversion system provided by AEG Power Solutions consists in a Convert SC Flex converter and a transformer embedded in an outdoor enclosure. Convert SC Flex bi-directional power converter provides an outstanding conversion efficiency factor for both the charging and discharging phases and offers a wide range of DC input voltage which spans from 330 V to 1000 V. This allows to use the converter with any type of battery technology. In the MiRIS project Convert SC flex is combined with a flow battery storage, proving its capability to provide the initial charging phase that those batteries specifically require. Convert SC Flex will also demonstrate in this configuration that it allows seamless transition between on and off-grid mode.

AEG Power Solutions Announces Successful Commissioning of Industrial UPS Protect 8 with Flex’ion Lithium-ion Batteries for Dow Chemical

  • First of a brand-new concept developed by AEG Power Solutions

Zwanenburg, The Netherlands, March 7, 2019 –, AEG Power Solutions, a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for all types of critical and demanding applications, today announced that it successfully commissioned the first Protect 8 industrial UPS equipped with Flex’ion Lithium-ion batteries to secure power for the manufacturing control process in Dow Chemical’s major production site in Stade (Germany).

The solution is composed of Protect 8.33 S10 60kVA, industrial UPS system with input transformer and 3-phase output and Saft batteries, using Super Lithium Iron Phosphate (SLFPTM) proprietary technology. The Saft SLFPTM battery has a nominal power of 36 kW for a backup time of 90 minutes. The battery package includes 3 parallel strings of 10 modules of 23 MFe installed in a cabinet and can be extended to 4 cabinets as an option to increase backup time.

The system installed will secure the control system of the chemical production process of the plant. For production quality, as well as for security and environmental reasons, chemical manufacturing processes should not be interrupted. Providing high quality, reliable power is essential and furthermore, it is crucial that the power supply system is rugged in design to continuously operate in harsh environments. Protect 8 UPS fitted with Flex’ion SLFPTM batteries is a robust and reliable solution which has proven track records in securing power for demanding critical applications. Using lithium-ion batteries in combination with the system was a way to answer the second challenge which was the limited footprint. The solution installed allows for a reduction of the battery volume by 60%, is 3 times more compact and 6 times lighter compared to VRLA lead-acid. Therefore, it saves the additional cost of a dedicated battery room and traditional battery maintenance. The batteries are, by design, suitable for mission critical applications and only require very light maintenance.
“For the past two years, the Dow global technical Power Electronics network investigated the possibility to use Li-Ion batteries to replace lead acid batteries at our chemical plants. We determined that the elimination of battery rooms and maintenance, as well as the smaller footprint offered by the Li-Ion batteries provided a significantly reduced long term Cost of Ownership, explains Jörg Harenberg
Sr.Electrical Design Technical Leader at Dow Chemical. “For the current project, we needed a UPS system, but were confronted by limited battery space and so we asked AEG PS, one of Dow’s preferred UPS suppliers, to make a proposal. AEG PS provided a solution using a UPS with Li.Ion battery technology and with SAFT, another preferred vendor of ours, as the battery supplier.

During the acceptance test at the Saft factory, we observed the new technology and offered suggestions for interface improvements; both Saft and AEG PS were very accommodating. The building, commissioning and start-up of the system went very smoothly, and we have been very pleased with the results.”
“Last year we tested the solution explains Anatoli Falk, product manager at AEG PS. Reducing maintenance, reducing the volume of the global power system, having batteries whose life cycle is closer to that of the UPS is answering an increasing market requirement. We are pleased of the success of this first installation with such a long-time partner as Dow Chemical.”

AEG Power Solutions has partnered with Saft since 2017 to embed Lithium-ion batteries in its industrial UPS systems to provide an enhanced solution to its customers, benefiting both from the rugged proven design of the Protect 8 series and from the advantages of the lithium-ion batteries increasing the backup availability in a significantly more compact volume. Engineering performed to combine the battery management system with the UPS user interface allows the Protect 8 series to operate with Flex’ion Lithium-ion batteries.

Warstein-Belecke, Germany, November 19, 2018 - AEG Power Solutions, a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for all types of critical and demanding applications, is demonstrating today a containerized energy storage solution featuring its Convert SC Flex system, during its Battery Energy Storage day, at its facility in Warstein-Belecke, Germany. The workshop attended by partners and customers is the opportunity to show on site a live 1MW micro grid demonstration including a Battery Energy Storage container, genset and variable loads.

Convert SC Flex on and off-grid functionnalities
The off grid functionalities of the converter are showcased live during the workshop by changing seamlessly between different operation scenarios including blackstart of the total system.
As the core element of any battery energy storage system, the converter charges and discharges batteries to store or provide power according to the application requirement such as frequency control, peak shaving, energy shifting (temporary storage to re-inject energy when maximizing profitability), or voltage control (often used to balance the voltage instability generated by integration of renewables in the grid). Convert SC Flex bi-directional power converter with IGBT technology benefits of power range up to 1MW for a single unit and provides an outstanding conversion efficiency factor for both the charging and discharging phases.

Convert SC Flex includes an option for seamless transition between off-grid and on-grid mode. This extends the battery energy system’s usage beyond its core functions, and is crucial when battery energy storage is used for full off-grid applications.

Partnership with Energon Advanced Energetics
The turnkey battery energy system, which is embedding Convert SC Flex, is provided by Energon Advanced Energetics (EAE). AEG Power Solutions and EAE are announcing their agreement to cooperate in a mutually beneficial Battery Energy Storage project partnership, combining their expertise and experience in the field of development, projection and delivering advanced battery systems (including EMS).

Energon Advanced Energetics is an EPC Contractor Company based in the Czech Republic and operating across Europe, engineering large scale battery storage systems (from hundreds kWh to several MWh), and driving complex projects in the field of energetics, distribution grids, energy storage systems and renewable energy sources.
