PV and CSP with Storage - long storage hours while cost competitive to fossil energy
When discussing energy storage, battery solutions are expected to solve the problem rather sooner than later. But there is no need to wait for Battery storage to reduce cost. The alternative is already on the market: Thermal Energy Storage (TES) offers a cost competitive solution for evening production from solar energy already today. Latest bids have resulted in prices of 7.4 USCent/kWh in Dubai for a 700 MW CSP stand alone plant with 10 hours of storage. This includes the TES and the additonal solar field to fill 10 hours of full load energy supply from storage. Morocco is evaluating a CSP-PV Hybrid solution, that is expected to reduce cost further. The blend of PV and CSP with TES provides the benefit from low cost PV energy during day and low cost energy from thermal storage during the evening peak hours.
