ABSTRACT:
Salzgitter AG is following the SALCOS project as an innovative approach to avoid CO2 emissions directly and to a very large extend (Carbon Direct Avoidance, CDA) in the steelmaking process itself, achievable via gradual replacement of coal by natural gas and flexible, stepwise increasing shares of electrolytical hydrogen in iron ore reduction, as well as the use of electricity for process heat supply in steelmaking.
