The Ter(r)awatt Hour of Truth – A 650°C Solution to the Climate Crisis
ABSTRACT:
Thermal energy makes up more than half of all energy use – for which we burn gas and coal. At the same time solar and wind deliver energy in big spikes. Using steel we can store enormous quantities of this clean, but fluctuating energy as 650°C heat – to be later used as process, local or district heating as required. We can also reconvert this heat to electricity using a standard steam engine. Carbon-free, disruptively affordable, and with high scalability to the gigawatt level.
